Valentine’s Day Gift Idea: A Sneak Peek at Maite Alberdi’s Heartfelt Film ‘A Child Of My Own’ at the Berlin Film Festival
Documentary Delves into Controversial Baby Theft Case at Berlin Film Festival
Berlin — Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza, known as Ale, found herself under immense societal and familial pressure to become a mother. Following three heartbreaking miscarriages, her desperation led to a shocking story that made headlines both nationally and internationally.
The documentary, A Child of My Own (Un Hijo Propio), directed by two-time Oscar nominee Maite Alberdi (The Mole Agent, The Eternal Memory), explores the complex narrative of whether a baby was gifted or stolen. Premiering today at the Berlin Film Festival, this Netflix documentary sheds light on a case that gripped public attention.
In the film, viewers discover that in 2008, Ale faked her pregnancy, convincing her husband Arturo and those around her that she would deliver a baby the following summer. In June 2009, she went to the Hospital General de México, where she worked, and left with a newborn girl hidden in a bag. Later, Ale and Arturo were apprehended at the Hotel Hollywood in Mexico City.
Alberdi became aware of Ale’s case years later while engaged in another project. "I usually shoot the present, with observation," Alberdi explained regarding her approach. "To understand the actual context, I needed to tell that past and that story that happened 13 years before [the project began]. It was a recreation of her point of view."
The film presents Ale’s perspective through dramatizations, featuring actress Ana Celeste Montalvo Peña as Ale and Armando Espitia as Arturo. While traditional media depicted Ale as a baby thief, Alberdi seeks to understand the emotional landscape surrounding her actions. "It’s completely another invitation [for the audience]. It’s trying to understand the context, to understand the pain," Alberdi noted, highlighting the intense social pressure women face in Latin America regarding motherhood.
Alberdi dedicated over three years to the project, capturing both recreations and interviews with key participants while researching archival content. "That’s what I love about documentary," she said. "We can discuss reality from another perspective and through a deep understanding over time."
Ale claimed that her husband was unaware of her scheme. To convincingly portray a pregnant woman, she gained weight and befriended a young woman who was willing to give away her baby. However, the actual mother denies any arrangement took place.
Reflecting on her experiences during the filmmaking process, Alberdi stated, "I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to hear the other voice, to understand the pain of the two sides."
With A Child of My Own, Alberdi continues her collaboration with Netflix, which has previously adapted her documentary The Mole Agent into the series A Man on the Inside. "I have so many good experiences with Netflix," she said, emphasizing the valuable exposure that the platform provides for documentary filmmakers.
The film aims to explore complex themes of motherhood and societal expectations, promising a nuanced look at a sensational case that challenges viewers to reconsider preconceived notions.
