Utopai East Acquires Alquimista Media, a Korean Production Company Led by Former Warner Bros and DramaFever Executive Hyun Park
K-Content Venture Utopai East Acquires Alquimista Media
Utopai East, a prominent player in the K-content landscape, has successfully acquired Alquimista Media, a production house based in Seoul and led by Hyun Park, a former executive at Warner Bros. Korea and co-founder of DramaFever. The acquisition grants Utopai East full ownership of Alquimista, along with its ambitious portfolio of 15 scripted television and film projects currently in development.
The deal comes at a time when Korean culture is increasingly resonating with audiences in the West. While financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, the breadth of the projects includes action thrillers, supernatural stories, romantic comedies, and family-oriented content, all tailored for international audiences.
Among Alquimista’s noteworthy projects is Bedford Park, which was co-produced with Utopai. The film, directed by Stephanie Ahn, recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Debut Feature and was subsequently acquired by Sony Pictures Classics.
This acquisition follows Utopai Studios’ collaboration with Stock Farm Road, which was announced three months ago to establish Utopai East as a joint venture dedicated to introducing Korean content to Hollywood. The acquisition of Alquimista represents a significant step in this broader strategy.
Utopai East is set to integrate Utopai Studios’ AI video storytelling technology into both existing and forthcoming projects. While Utopai Studios focuses on developing cinematic AI tools, Utopai East operates as a traditional production entity.
Kevin Chong, CEO of Utopai East, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, "We are building Utopai East to define the next era of global entertainment. We are truly excited to launch with the Alquimista Media team in Korea, one of the most powerful creative engines in the world today."
Under the Utopai East banner, Alquimista’s team will spearhead development and production in Korea. Hyun Park will continue to oversee operations, focusing on expanding the slate to include both Korean and Japanese intellectual properties.
With over two decades of experience across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, Park has held significant roles at CJ ENM’s Studio Dragon and was a co-founder of DramaFever. He is joined at Alquimista by Wonjo Jeong, previously Head of Development at Apple TV Korea, and Jeongdo Jang, a former executive producer at Studio Dragon.
Park noted, "Becoming part of Utopai East allows us to scale our creative ambitions globally while staying true to the DNA of Korean and Asian storytelling. We’re excited to empower our creators with Utopai Studios’ AI technology platform." He expressed gratitude toward Utopai East for its commitment to supporting their stories and creators.
Cecilia Shen, co-founder and CEO of Utopai Studios, highlighted the significance of Park joining their team, given Korea’s pivotal role in the global creative landscape. The recent Grammy win for the K-Pop song "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters further underscores the growing integration of Korean culture into Western entertainment.
"This acquisition is about supporting great storytellers at scale," Shen added. "By combining an established creative team with the production technology we’ve been building, we aim to enhance the efficiency of bringing projects from development to production without compromising the creative process."
