USC is About to Name Gary Patterson as the New Defensive Coordinator for the Trojans
USC Set to Hire Gary Patterson as Defensive Coordinator
In a significant move for the USC Trojans, head coach Lincoln Riley is nearing an agreement to hire Gary Patterson, the former head coach of Texas Christian University (TCU), as the team’s new defensive coordinator. A source familiar with the situation, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the development.
Patterson, who has been absent from a full-time coaching role since 2021, recently achieved the prestigious honor of being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot. His 24-season tenure at TCU, which included 21 years as head coach, solidified his reputation as a leading defensive strategist and a keen evaluator of talent. His innovative 4-2-5 defensive scheme led TCU to five seasons ranked as the nation’s top defense, and he earned Associated Press College Football Coach of the Year honors twice.
As the winningest coach in TCU history and the second-longest tenured coach in college football behind Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, Patterson’s exit in October 2021 followed discussions concerning his future with the program. Riley, who was then Oklahoma’s head coach, expressed profound disappointment upon learning of Patterson’s departure.
After Riley transitioned to USC a month later, Patterson accepted consulting roles with various Texas-based programs. He served as a defensive analyst for Steve Sarkisian at Texas in 2022 and briefly returned to Texas but ultimately chose to take a year off before joining Baylor’s staff as a senior-level strategic consultant.
Meanwhile, Riley’s attempts to establish a stable defense at USC struggled. Under former coordinator Alex Grinch, the Trojans’ defensive performance reached a low point in 2023, ranking 121st in points allowed and 119th in yards allowed, resulting in Grinch’s dismissal.
Riley, intent on creating a formidable defense, stated in November 2023, “I have complete belief, conviction. It is going to happen. There’s not a reason in the world why it can’t.” This followed a significant dip during D’Anton Lynn’s tenure as defensive coordinator, where USC improved but still faced challenges due to injuries and eventual staff changes, leading to Lynn’s departure for a coordinator role at Penn State.
Patterson’s potential arrival comes as USC has recently secured commitments from five players for its defense, despite losing prominent contributors. He is known for his ability to maximize the potential of underappreciated defensive talents, raising questions about how his coaching dynamic will unfold in a different setting.
The future of USC’s defensive staff remains uncertain, with implications for existing coaches, as organizational changes appear likely under Patterson’s leadership.
