Understanding the 2026 NBA All-Star Game: A Closer Look at the USA vs. World Format
NBA All-Star Weekend Returns to Los Angeles with New Format
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The NBA All-Star Weekend has made its eagerly awaited return to Los Angeles, featuring a series of events across the city that celebrate the sport of basketball.
In a significant shift for the All-Star Game, the NBA has announced a new competition format for the 2026 event, scheduled to take place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, home of the Los Angeles Clippers. The revamped format will pit two U.S. teams against one international team in a round-robin tournament.
Under the updated structure, each team will compete in a series of four 12-minute games. The World team is set to face the USA Stars in the tournament opener, with the winner advancing to duel the USA Stripes. The losing team from the first match will compete against the remaining team in the third game. In the event that all three teams finish with identical records, point differential will be utilized as the tiebreaker.
Reactions from players have been diverse, with some favoring the traditional East vs. West format. Kawhi Leonard expressed ambivalence about the change, stating, "Can’t say I hate it or love it. I’d rather just be East and West and go out there and compete and see what the outcome is.” Fellow player Cade Cunningham added, “I would like to experience the East versus West. I want to experience what all the greats played in.”
However, Kevin Durant emphasized that the All-Star weekend transcends traditional competitiveness. “This is a great weekend to bring so many people together and help push the game forward,” Durant remarked.
Boston’s Jaylen Brown proposed the idea of a one-on-one challenge in the future, highlighting a desire to display more individualized competition. “I’m actually a big fan of one-on-one,” he said. Brown expressed his willingness to face notable players like Luka Dončić and Donovan Mitchell for charity.
The All-Star Game is set to take place on Sunday, February 15, at 2 p.m. PT. Fans can catch all the action live on NBC and streaming via Peacock. As the weekend unfolds, basketball enthusiasts are looking forward to what promises to be an exciting celebration of the sport.
