### Spotify Introduces “Listening Age” Feature in 2025 Wrapped Report
Spotify has released its annual Wrapped report, providing users with insights into their listening habits over the past year. This year’s edition was launched on December 3, 2025, and includes a new feature that has captured user attention: the “listening age.”
Spotify Wrapped, a tradition since 2016, offers users a reflective overview of their music, podcast, and audiobook consumption. Describing the initiative, Spotify states it serves as “a mirror showing the moments, moods, and memories that made your listening uniquely yours.”
The addition of the “listening age” category has generated considerable buzz on social media, with many users expressing surprise at how their music preferences reflect an age that often differs significantly from their actual age.
### Understanding Listening Age
The “listening age” feature seeks to capture the generational connection users have with their music choices. Spotify links this concept to what it describes as a “reminiscence bump,” relating to the music that resonates most strongly with listeners from their youth.
As users shared their results online, ages assigned by Spotify ranged from 16 to 92, leading many to question how their listening age was calculated.
### Methodology Behind Listening Age Calculation
To establish a user’s listening age, Spotify contrasts users’ music preferences with their actual age, rather than merely averaging the years of their favorite artists or the release dates of songs.
The process begins with analyzing the release dates of songs played over the previous year. From this data, Spotify identifies a five-year period during which a user engaged significantly more with music than their peers. This timeframe, representing the user’s “reminiscence bump,” assumes they were between the ages of 16 and 21 when those songs were released.
For instance, if Spotify determines a listening age of 30, it suggests the user has a fondness for music from the early 2010s. The platform elaborated on this with a hypothetical: “If you listen to way more music from the late 1970s than others your age, we playfully hypothesize that your ‘listening’ age is 63 today, the age of someone who would have been in their formative years in the late 1970s.”
### Additional Categories in Spotify Wrapped
While “listening age” has garnered significant attention, Spotify Wrapped 2025 includes various familiar categories, such as total minutes listened, top songs, top podcasts, top artists, top genres, and top albums, along with a fan leaderboard.
Each user’s Wrapped experience is personalized based on their listening habits and settings. The total minutes include every instance of listening, even in private mode; however, private listening sessions do not contribute to other categories, such as top albums.
Spotify compiles each listener’s top artists by evaluating total minutes and plays, using this data to rank fan engagement. In the Fan Leaderboard category, only the top listeners for specific artists are recognized.
This year, Spotify has also introduced features that analyze listeners’ emotional preferences, creating a dedicated space for individual music genres and moods, along with an archive reflecting the user’s biggest discovery, most nostalgic day, and listening peaks.
