UK Competition Watchdog Wants Your Thoughts on Paramount-Warner Bros Deal Before Formal Investigation
The UK’s antitrust authority has initiated preliminary steps toward a formal investigation of the proposed $110 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. This move aims to assess the impact of the significant deal on competition within the global media sector.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced it is seeking feedback from interested parties prior to delving deeper into the transaction, which is poised to reshape the media landscape.
According to the CMA, “This ‘invitation to comment’ allows interested parties to submit any initial views on the impact that the transaction could have on competition in the UK.” They noted that a formal investigation has not yet begun, and this step is part of the information-gathering process.
The deadline for submitting comments is set for April 27. Actor Mark Ruffalo, known for his role in Poor Things, shared a link to the CMA’s merger inquiry page on social media. Both Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have been approached for comment.
Earlier this year, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison engaged with UK officials, including culture secretary Lisa Nandy, as part of a strategy to win over European regulators.
This inquiry coincides with a letter from prominent filmmakers including JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, David Fincher, and Denis Villeneuve. The letter expresses opposition to the merger, stating that it could “threaten the sustainability of the entire creative community.”
