UCLA Women’s Basketball Players Celebrate Cori Close as Their Champion
UCLA Women’s Basketball Team Claims First National Championship
In a historic victory, the UCLA women’s basketball team secured its first NCAA national championship title by defeating South Carolina 79-51 on Sunday. Coach Cori Close, while expressing gratitude for the win, downplayed any personal validation it may represent for her coaching career, emphasizing that her focus remained on the team’s journey.
"Coach Cori has really inspired us to respond well and push for this moment,” said senior guard Gabriela Jaquez. “I’m super proud of her, especially how she stepped up as a leader last year. It all started with her desire to revitalize our program.”
Cori Close, who took the helm of the Bruins in 2011, advanced the team to the Final Four last season but faced a significant defeat against Connecticut. This time, however, the players turned the tables against their formidable opponents. Close reflected on her long-term vision, stating, "This has been a calling, not a job. I’m really grateful for what we’ve accomplished."
Throughout her tenure, Close has been recognized for her recruiting skills and motivational presence, but her tactical decisions have occasionally faced scrutiny. In the title game against South Carolina, Close demonstrated significant growth, leading to a decisive victory that solidifies her status as a top coach in women’s college basketball.
Praise for Close also came from opposing coach Dawn Staley, who acknowledged her contributions to the sport. “Cori is one of those people who really works at making our game better,” Staley said. “Although we didn’t win, I can swallow it because we lost to a really good person and a great team.”
Looking ahead, Close faces the challenge of rebuilding her roster, losing six seniors and graduate students. However, she expressed optimism, noting the team’s unity and commitment to their shared goals. Senior Lauren Betts, named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, said, “Coach Cori really stayed patient with me. I feel like I can finally truly see what I’m capable of. That’s what I’m most proud of.”
The Bruins’ victory sparked celebrations nationwide, with notable figures like Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and basketball legend Magic Johnson extending their congratulations. The state capital was illuminated in UCLA colors to honor the championship win.
In addition to the basketball triumph, the UCLA gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA championships after a close competition in Corvallis, Ore. Senior Jordan Chiles successfully executed a routine that earned her an unprecedented eighth perfect 10 of the season, sealing a regional victory for the Bruins.
Meanwhile, the UCLA baseball team completed a three-game sweep of USC, maintaining a remarkable 23-game winning streak with a decisive 10-4 win in their latest matchup.
The Bruins continue to build on recent successes, with spring football workouts also kicking off this week, promising a busy athletic calendar ahead.
