UCLA to Introduce Special Jackie Robinson Day Baseball Uniforms
UCLA to Unveil Jackie Robinson Day-Themed Baseball Uniforms
UCLA Athletics is set to unveil the baseball team’s Jackie Robinson Day-themed uniforms on Monday, ahead of the annual tribute to the Dodgers legend. The event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Acosta Athletic Complex.
Sonya Pankey, Jackie Robinson’s eldest granddaughter and executive vice president of brand development for the Jackie Robinson Estate, will present the jerseys, as confirmed by organizers.
Last month, UCLA provided a glimpse of the uniforms on social media, with an initial preview shared on X. A more detailed look at the design was later released by the sports media outlet UNISWAG, which specializes in uniforms and team branding.
The uniforms were developed in collaboration with Nike and are expected to make their debut when the Bruins face UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, followed by a three-game series against Minnesota starting Friday.
Jackie Robinson Day, observed on April 15, honors the day in 1947 when Robinson became Major League Baseball’s first Black player, breaking the color barrier. On this date each year, all MLB players, coaches, and umpires wear Robinson’s No. 42 in tribute.
Robinson’s connection to UCLA is significant; he was the school’s first athlete to letter in four sports: baseball, basketball, football, and track. A standout running back, he also competed in track and field, along with one season of varsity baseball.
After his time at UCLA, Robinson played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 1947 and later securing the National League MVP title in 1949.
Jackie Robinson passed away on October 24, 1972, at the age of 53. His legacy remains alive in baseball and at UCLA, where Jackie Robinson Stadium, located on the Veterans Affairs’ West Los Angeles campus, stands in his honor.
