UCLA Men’s Basketball Secures No. 7 Seed and Prepares to Compete Against No. 10 UCF in Philadelphia
UCLA Bruins Prepare for NCAA Tournament Challenge Under High Expectations
UCLA head coach Mick Cronin is confident that his team will rise to the occasion as they embark on another NCAA tournament journey, a path laden with the weight of tradition and high expectations. The Bruins, who hold the NCAA record with 11 national titles and have made 19 Final Four appearances, begin their quest for another championship on Friday. They will face No. 10 seed Central Florida (21-11) in Philadelphia as part of the East Regional. A win would set the stage for a matchup against the victor of the game between No. 2 seed Connecticut (29-5) and No. 15 seed Furman (22-12).
After returning to Los Angeles from the Big Ten tournament on Sunday morning, Cronin noted the significance of their Friday opener. "I was hoping for this break," he said, reflecting on past experiences when teams were pressed for time before tournament play. Ultimately, Cronin confirmed that the extra day provided for his players has been beneficial.
The coach’s decision to rest forward Tyler Bilodeau and guard Donovan Dent during the Bruins’ 73-66 semifinal loss to Purdue was driven by a commitment to postseason success. Bilodeau sustained a minor knee sprain in a previous match against Michigan State, while Dent suffered a calf strain during the game against Purdue. Both players are expected to be available for the upcoming tournament games.
“Tyler could have played [against Purdue]. You know, Donny could have played. They would have been playing hurt,” Cronin explained after the loss. “I just try to take care of guys.”
Despite the setback against Purdue, Cronin expressed optimism, noting that the increased playing time for Eric Freeny, Xavier Booker, Steven Jamerson II, and Brandon Williams could prove vital as the competition intensifies. While acknowledging the valiant effort against the Big Ten champions, he emphasized that the upcoming tournament holds greater importance for his players.
"With all due respect to the Big Ten, you could see how hard our guys are trying to win. But our guys are well aware, because they practice under 11 banners that say national championship every day," Cronin remarked. He highlighted the unrivaled perspective of the Bruins as they gear up for the NCAA tournament, where they will don their iconic baby blue uniforms.
Entering the tournament with a 4-1 streak, UCLA appears particularly formidable as March unfolds. Cronin praised his players’ recent performances and emphasized the need for continued defensive focus. "Since March 1, it’s been a noted change in our team. We’ve just got to keep it up," he noted.
UCF, coached by former Duke star Johnny Dawkins, also poses a significant challenge. Key player Themus Fulks, who averaged 14.1 points and 6.7 assists per game during the regular season, earned third-team All-Big 12 honors. UCF has notable victories over Kansas, Texas Tech, and Brigham Young this season.
As the Bruins prepare to face the Knights, all eyes will be on their historic potential and the hopes of another championship run.
