Two People Arrested After Attempting to Send Drugs to LA County Jail Inmates, According to LASD
Authorities Arrest Two in Smuggling Investigation in Hermosa Beach
In a significant law enforcement operation, a man and woman were apprehended in connection with a thwarted attempt to smuggle narcotics to inmates within the Los Angeles County jail system. The investigation, conducted by detectives from the sheriff’s Custody Services Division, focused on the illicit movement of contraband through the U.S. Postal Service.
Authorities executed a search warrant in the coastal community of Hermosa Beach, utilizing resources from the department’s Organized Gang Task Force.
Two individuals were arrested on Tuesday during the operation. A 43-year-old woman has been identified as having sent narcotics via mail to a county jail. Following her arrest, she was cited and released from custody. Meanwhile, a 55-year-old man remains in custody; details regarding his arrest and the specific allegations against him are still forthcoming.
Crucially, authorities managed to intercept the narcotics before they could enter the jail facilities. The sheriff’s department has implemented enhanced security measures to combat drug smuggling, which include the installation of 17 body scanners throughout the jail system and two property scanners at the Pitchess Detention Center’s visiting area. Additionally, 19 narcotics detection dogs are deployed for random searches at various detention centers.
In a bid to further modernize security measures, the sheriff’s department has proposed the introduction of a digital mail system utilizing electronic tablets. Moreover, all deputies are equipped with Narcan (naloxone), a medication designed to counteract opioid overdoses, ensuring its availability in inmate housing areas.
