Two Brothers Die in Bell Gardens Apartment Explosion
LOS ANGELES – A devastating explosion at an apartment complex in Bell Gardens on Tuesday claimed the lives of two brothers, aged 13 and 24, who were reportedly involved in assembling a homemade firework or explosive device when the incident occurred.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the explosion at a two-story building on Purdy Avenue around 6 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing flames shooting into the sky, with one neighbor capturing the blast on surveillance footage. The fire caused significant damage, displacing several families.
Emergency crews confirmed one fatality at the scene, while a child and the 24-year-old brother were rushed to a nearby hospital. The following day, authorities identified the deceased 13-year-old as Carlos Hernandez. By Thursday, the man, identified as Christopher Benitez, succumbed to his injuries.
Although the official cause of the explosion is under investigation, sheriff’s officials indicated that evidence consistent with homemade explosives and fireworks was discovered at the scene. A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department assured the community that the incident appears isolated and does not pose an ongoing threat.
At least four families were displaced due to the explosion, affecting 17 adults and seven children. The apartment building has been red-tagged, with at least one unit deemed unlivable. A building inspector is currently assessing the situation to determine when families may be able to return.
The Red Cross has stepped in to provide shelter for those impacted by the incident, which has left a profound mark on the local community. The investigation is being handled by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and the Arson Explosives Detail, as officials continue to seek clarity on the tragic event.
