Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Passes Away During Relay Race
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. – The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is in mourning following the death of Deputy Levi Vargas, who tragically died after suffering a medical emergency during the Baker to Vegas relay race over the weekend.
Deputy Vargas, an 11-year veteran of the department, experienced a medical crisis while participating in the annual 120-mile relay on Saturday. Immediate medical assistance was administered, and he was transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, his condition worsened, and he passed away several hours later.
A memorial procession to honor Vargas is scheduled for today at 4 p.m. at the San Dimas station, where he most recently served.
Vargas is survived by his wife, siblings, and parents. Colleagues described him as a dedicated professional known for his compassion towards the community.
The Baker to Vegas relay is a premier event for law enforcement, drawing participation from teams across nine states and international competitors from Canada and Berlin. This annual event not only fosters camaraderie among law enforcement agencies but also serves as a fundraiser.
Sheriff Robert Luna addressed the department’s response: “Medical folks came in right away and they tended to him and they got him transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, his condition declined in several hours and we were notified of the very, very sad news that he had passed. So our priority under these circumstances is to support his family.” The department also emphasized Vargas’s compassionate nature and professionalism.
Details surrounding the specific nature of the medical emergency and the exact cause of death have not yet been disclosed.
The community and law enforcement members are set to gather at the San Dimas station this afternoon to pay their respects to the fallen deputy.
