Tragic Accident: Man Dies While Digging Under Santa Ana Bridge
Man Crushed While Digging Under Santa Ana Bridge
SANTA ANA, Calif. – A tragic incident occurred Tuesday when a man was fatally crushed while digging beneath a bridge in Santa Ana. Authorities confirmed that the victim, believed to have been living under the bridge, became trapped after the hole he was excavating collapsed.
Witnesses at the scene reported the man was discovered by a friend, who subsequently called 911. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the 17th Street bridge near Fairview Avenue along the Santa Ana River bed.
Firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority located the man trapped in a self-dug hole. "There was no work being done there. It was not a construction site or anything like that," said Captain Greg Barta. "As far as the individual’s living situation or anything about the individual, we don’t have any information." Barta indicated that concrete from above the excavation gave way, resulting in the man’s death.
The victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed, though friends of the man indicated that he had been living under the bridge prior to the incident. Witnesses noted that multiple individuals appeared to be residing in makeshift shelters along both sides of the river.
The incident raises broader concerns regarding homelessness in Southern California. Several residents highlighted ongoing issues related to individuals living in precarious conditions, including recent reports that feature shocking situations, such as a woman found living in a storm drain in South Los Angeles.
Local authorities have emphasized the need for vigilance in these areas. "If you see something out of the ordinary, you see somebody [who’s] in trouble, please call us," Barta urged. Signs are posted along the riverbed indicating that camping and storage of personal property are prohibited, warning that violators could face citations or arrest for trespassing.
