Torrance Welcomes a New 12-Story Mural Celebrating the ‘Samurai of the Diamond’ Dodgers
Dodgers Honored in Grand Mural Ahead of Opening Day
A striking new mural has debuted on the DoubleTree Hotel in Torrance, celebrating three prominent players from the Los Angeles Dodgers as they prepare for Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. This impressive artwork, towering 12 stories high, features pitchers Roki Sasaki and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, along with the four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani, who earned the title of World Series MVP in 2025.
Artist Robert Vargas unveiled the mural on Tuesday, just two days before the Dodgers embark on their quest for a third consecutive World Series title. The mural, titled "Samurai of the Diamond," is proclaimed by the city of Torrance to be "the largest LA Dodgers mural in the world."
Incorporating augmented reality technology, the mural reflects Vargas’s distinctive style, adding a modern touch to the artistic representation of these celebrated players.
Vargas spoke about the deeper significance of his work, stating, “These murals, at the heart of it, are about representation, about bridging cultures, unity. From my Shohei Ohtani mural, ‘LA Rising’ in Little Tokyo, to my Fernando Valenzuela in Boyle Heights to, of course, this one."
He emphasized the mural’s celebratory nature, adding, "This one really celebrates a collective of these players, and I think it’s a really special time, not only in, of course, Dodgers sports, but in this community’s history."
As anticipation builds, the Dodgers are set to face off against the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium, with the game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Viewers can catch the live broadcast on NBC4 and Peacock.
