Tommy Lee Jones Joins the Cast of FX’s ‘The Lowdown’ for Season 2: His First Scripted TV Role in Almost 40 Years
Tommy Lee Jones Joins Cast of FX Series The Lowdown for Season 2
Acclaimed actor Tommy Lee Jones, known for his performances in The Fugitive and other notable films, has signed on to join the cast of FX’s The Lowdown for its second season. This announcement comes shortly after the addition of fellow actress Betty Gilpin, who was confirmed earlier this month.
The Lowdown, created by Sterlin Harjo, premiered its first season to critical acclaim. The series centers on Lee Raybon, portrayed by Ethan Hawke, a self-declared "truthstorian" from Tulsa whose relentless quest for uncovering truths often lands him in precarious situations. Lee is committed to revealing corruption and exposing societal issues, irrespective of the personal risks involved.
In the inaugural season, Lee’s latest exposé on the influential Washberg family leads to the enigmatic suicide of Dale Washberg, played by Tim Blake Nelson. This event acts as a catalyst, spurring Lee to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding Dale’s death.
The series boasts an impressive cast, including Keith David and guest appearances from Kyle MacLachlan, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Peter Dinklage, among others. In January, The Lowdown was renewed for a second season after receiving recognition from the AFI Awards as one of 2025’s ten most outstanding television programs.
Production for the upcoming season is set to begin this spring in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Lowdown is produced by FX Productions, with episodes currently available for streaming on Hulu.
Tommy Lee Jones has primarily made a name for himself in film but has also made significant contributions to television. His career includes prominent roles in series like One Life to Live and Lonesome Dove, the latter of which earned him an Emmy Award in 1983. His most recent television appearance was in the 2011 HBO film The Sunset Limited, where he acted alongside Samuel L. Jackson. Jones is represented by CAA and Jacobson Russell Saltz.
