Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu Share Title and Release Date for Their New Movie – Check Out the Announcement Teaser
Warner Bros. and Legendary Announce Release Date for Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially titled their upcoming Tom Cruise film, directed by four-time Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film, titled Digger, is set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026—coinciding with the release date of the acclaimed Joker in 2019.
The film’s teaser has been released, accompanied by a poster featuring the tagline, “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.” Initial speculation suggests the film centers on a powerful global figure who believes he is a savior. In response to these theories, González Iñárritu emphasized at the Cannes Film Festival, “No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so fu*king impressed and happy.”
Digger marks González Iñárritu’s first feature since his 2022 film, Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, released on Netflix. The Mexico-born filmmaker gained significant acclaim for the 2015 film The Revenant, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director, as well as three Oscars for Birdman in 2016, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
The teaser footage features Cruise in cowboy boots, humorously dancing with a shovel in a low-rent Los Angeles-style apartment and on a pier, showcasing a disheveled appearance.
Competing for audience attention on the same release date is Verity, a feature adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel directed by Michael Showalter, starring Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway.
