Tiger Woods Declares Not Guilty in DUI Case, Plans to Prioritize Health and Treatment
Tiger Woods Announces Treatment Plan Following DUI Arrest
Golf icon Tiger Woods has pledged to prioritize his well-being by seeking treatment shortly after his attorney entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf. Woods was arrested on Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) with property damage following a rollover crash near his home in Jupiter Island, Florida.
In the arrest affidavit, authorities reported that Woods had bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, and was sweating profusely during field sobriety tests. Hydrocodone pills were also found in his pocket.
In a court appearance on Tuesday, attorney Douglas Duncan waived arraignment for Woods, pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor charges, and requested a jury trial.
Later that day, Woods took to social media, stating, “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.” He expressed gratitude for the understanding and support from his community, requesting privacy for himself and his loved ones.
Woods, 50, had been contemplating a return to competitive golf for the upcoming Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, where he has clinched five championships. However, following his recent legal troubles, he will not appear at the tournament or the annual Champions Dinner scheduled for April 7.
Masters chairman Fred Ridley stated, “Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being. Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta.”
Woods last competed on the PGA Tour in July 2024, recording a missed cut at the Open Championship after scores of 79 and 77. His legacy includes 82 PGA Tour victories, with 15 major titles, although he has faced numerous injuries in recent years, significantly limiting his participation.
When questioned during his arrest about his medical history, Woods revealed he has endured seven back surgeries and over 20 leg operations. He has also been involved in multiple car accidents throughout his career. A notable incident in 2009 led to widespread scandal and allegations, ultimately resulting in his divorce from Elin Nordegren.
In 2021, Woods suffered severe injuries in a rollover crash near Rancho Palos Verdes, prompting significant surgery on his lower right leg and ankle. As he embarks on this latest path to recovery, the golfing community remains hopeful for his return to the sport he has defined.
