Three Studios Compete to Bring Tom Hanks and Marielle Heller Together Again in ‘The Comebacker’
Dodgers Season Opens Amid Hollywood’s Film Competition
As the Los Angeles Dodgers kick off their season in pursuit of a third consecutive championship title, the Hollywood film scene is buzzing with excitement over a new project: The Comebacker. This film reunites actor Tom Hanks and director Marielle Heller, known for their previous collaboration on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Based on a short story by Dave Eggers, The Comebacker has been described as a love letter to baseball, with Heller penning the screenplay. Three major studios—Sony, Focus Features, and one unnamed competitor—are currently vying for distribution rights.
In the film, Hanks portrays a pitching coach whose life is drastically altered when he is struck by a line drive while on the mound. While a lead actor to play the young pitcher has yet to be announced, it is expected that numerous rising stars will be keen to take on the role. Production is slated to begin in October, with Hanks and his partner Gary Goetzman producing through their company Playtone, alongside Heller’s collaborator Leah Holzer from Defiant By Nature. With only one studio able to secure the project, the remaining two will be reminded of the old adage: “There’s no crying in baseball.”
Hanks and Goetzman are currently concluding work on Greyhound 2 in Australia, a project for which Hanks also wrote the script and stars in. The film is being directed by Aaron Schneider for Apple Original Films. Barring any protracted negotiations, a deal for The Comebacker is expected to be finalized by the end of the weekend.
