Thousands Gather for No Kings Protests Across Southern California as Nationwide Movement Grows
Gates Installed Ahead of Anticipated "No Kings" Protests in Los Angeles
In preparation for the "No Kings" protests scheduled for this weekend, Caltrans crews have installed gates overnight at various onramps and offramps along the 101 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles. The upcoming demonstration is expected to be one of the largest single-day mobilizations in U.S. history.
The "No Kings Day of Nonviolent Action," set for March 28, aims to address concerns over perceived authoritarianism under the Trump administration. This movement is led by Indivisible and 50501, following a significant turnout of approximately 12 million participants in 2025. Over 320 events have been confirmed across California, including significant rallies at Los Angeles City Hall, the Sacramento State Capitol, and San Francisco’s Embarcadero Plaza.
The national day of action has officially commenced in Southern California. What began as a centralized initiative has grown into a substantial regional mobilization, with organizers arranging simultaneous protests in dozens of U.S. cities as a response to federal policies and the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Key Developments:
As the flagship rally is set to take place at 2 p.m. at Gloria Molina Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles, major protest activities will also occur in nearly every significant urban area in Southern California. Local groups, including 50501 SoCal and various grassroots organizations, are spearheading these efforts in response to recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions and military escalations.
Regional coordinator Marcus Chen emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, "This isn’t just a ‘Los Angeles’ story; this is a Southern California story. From the high desert to the coast, people are showing up in their own backyards to say that accountability isn’t optional."
National Scope and Peaceful Intentions
Ezra Levin, the co-executive director of Indivisible, articulated the movement’s purpose, asserting that it serves as a counter to the authoritarian tactics perceived in the current administration. "With every ICE raid, every escalation abroad, and every abuse of power at home, Americans are rising up in opposition to Trump’s attempt to rule through fear and force," he remarked. Organizers reiterated their commitment to peaceful resistance, labeling the movement a "peaceful, nationwide resistance" and a "moral imperative."
Background on the Movement
The "No Kings" movement, which emerged shortly after the 2025 presidential inauguration, is characterized by a coalition-led approach resisting what advocates consider authoritarian tendencies within the Trump administration. Grounded in the "3.5% rule" of nonviolent social change, the movement celebrated a pivotal moment on June 14, 2025, when millions gathered to oppose a taxpayer-funded military parade, reinforcing the idea of popular sovereignty.
Since that initial "Day of Defiance," the coalition has transitioned into a sustained national force, successfully mobilizing over 12 million participants while maintaining a strict commitment to nonviolence in combating increased ICE raids and federal judicial appointments.
Future Actions and Legislative Advocacy
Following this national day of action, the coalition intends to focus on local legislative advocacy and voter protection initiatives as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
