The UK Premiere Date for the ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel ‘The Mad King’ is Finally Here This Summer
Theatrical Adaptation of "Game of Thrones" to Debut in Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford-upon-Avon’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre is set to unveil "The Mad King," a stage prequel to the acclaimed series "Game of Thrones," on July 20, with an official opening scheduled for August 8. The production is set to run until September 5, as announced by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) on its official platform.
RSC Co-Artistic Directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey expressed their enthusiasm for the project in a joint statement: "We are thrilled to share the full creative team and announce performance dates for Game of Thrones: The Mad King. This production brings together some of theatre’s most visionary talents to reimagine George R. R. Martin’s world for the stage. In a bold new configuration of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, audiences will find themselves at the very heart of the action—immersed in the intrigue and theatrical spectacle that promises to make this production truly epic. It’s an ambitious and exhilarating collaboration, and we can’t wait to welcome audiences into this extraordinary experience."
The creative team features prominent figures, including puppetry and movement designers Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell, set designer Chloe Lamford, costume designer Georgia McGuinness, lighting designer Jon Clark, composer Will Stuart, and sound designer Tom Gibbons. The play is scripted by Duncan Macmillan, known for Every Brilliant Thing, and directed by Dominic Cooke.
The synopsis teases: “A long winter thaws in Harrenhal, and spring is promised. At a lavish banquet on the eve of a jousting tournament, lovers meet and revelers speculate about who will contend. But in the shadows, amid growing unease at the bloodthirsty actions of the realm’s merciless Mad King, dissenters from his inner circle anxiously advance a treasonous plot. Far away, the drums of battle sound. Family bonds, ancient prophecies, and the sacred line of succession will be tested in a dangerous campaign for power. Who will survive? Who will rise?”
Inspired by the lore of "Robert’s Rebellion" from Martin’s expansive book series, the narrative explores the tumultuous romance between Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, the son of the Mad King Aerys, and Lyanna Stark, who is engaged to Robert Baratheon. Their relationship sparks a rebellion that ultimately leads to the downfall of House Targaryen.
Familiar characters from the "Game of Thrones" saga, including Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister, are anticipated to make appearances in "The Mad King."
