The Lowest Halftime Score Ever Recorded in Super Bowl History
The Seattle Seahawks emerged with a commanding 9-0 lead over the New England Patriots at halftime of Super Bowl LX, thanks to two successful field goals by kicker Jason Myers.
Despite the low score, it does not mark the lowest halftime tally in Super Bowl history. That unfortunate distinction belongs to Super Bowl IX, held after the 1974 season. In that game, a matchup of formidable defenses—Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain and Minnesota’s Purple People Eaters—culminated in a first-half score of merely 2-0.
The only points of that halftime came midway through the second quarter when Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton, facing a second and 7 from his own 10-yard line, lost control of the ball. Tarkenton had to recover the fumble in the end zone while being touched by Steelers defensive end Dwight White, who was credited with the sack. This event marked the first safety recorded in Super Bowl history and gave Pittsburgh a narrow lead.
The Steelers built on this advantage and ultimately triumphed over the Vikings with a final score of 16-6, securing their first of four Super Bowl victories in a six-year period.
In contrast, the second-lowest halftime score occurred in Super Bowl LIII after the 2018 season, when the Patriots held a 3-0 lead over the Rams, courtesy of a 42-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski in the early second quarter.
