Designers such as The Row, Hermès, and Boss are embracing this iconic style, demonstrating that it can be chic and sophisticated rather than dated.
Originally popularized by young Hollywood stars during red carpet events, the trend has evolved from whimsical combinations of flouncy dresses layered over bootcut jeans to more streamlined, minimalist looks. Today’s rendition focuses on longer hemlines and harmonized layers, reflecting the current preference for timeless aesthetics in fashion.
Although reminiscent of the Kids’ Choice Awards, the practice dates back to the mid-19th century. At Boss, models showcased draped gowns over tailored slacks, while mini-skirts were paired with trousers, infusing a fresh take on office wear. Similarly, at Copenhagen Fashion Week, airy tailored pants and sheer fabrics offered a Scandinavian twist on this once quirky combination.
Personal stylist Kenzie Welch suggests that the dress-over-pants ensemble adds “a unique and interesting proportion” to outfits while retaining elegance. For those hesitant to try the trend, Welch recommends starting with tunic tops or shirt dresses, which provide a balanced look without being overwhelming.
Stylist Coco Schiffer advises that to distance the aesthetic from its early-2000s roots, one should aim for polished looks using a monochrome color palette.
