The much-anticipated Beatles biopics are officially underway, with significant developments announced at CinemaCon 2025.
In early 2024, Sony Pictures and Neal Street Productions revealed that acclaimed director Sam Mendes would oversee four distinct yet interconnected films about the iconic band. Mendes expressed his excitement in a February 2024 statement, voicing his honor in portraying "the greatest rock band of all time" and his desire to redefine cinematic storytelling.
During the March 31 event, Mendes unveiled the confirmed cast for the "Fab Four." Barry Keoghan will portray Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal takes on the role of Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn will play George Harrison, and Harris Dickinson is set to depict John Lennon.
In his presentation, Mendes also shared that the overarching title for the series will be The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, which aims to offer viewers a "first bingable theatrical experience" upon its release in April 2028.
Mendes elaborated on the films’ narratives, stating that each will explore the unique perspective of one band member, leading to a deeper understanding of their individual stories. "They’re four very different human beings," he noted. While the films will be distinct, Mendes emphasized the inevitable intersections of their lives, a sentiment echoed by Starr. He remarked, “My life as a lad, John’s life, Paul’s life, George’s life — it must interact in some way.”
The full ensemble cast for the films was confirmed in March 2025. Alongside the four leads, notable actors include David Morrissey as McCartney’s father and Leanne Best as Lennon’s Aunt Mimi. Additional cast members include James Norton, Harry Lloyd, and Adam Pally, among others.
Mendes, recognized for his work on Skyfall and 1917, has long sought the opportunity to create a film about The Beatles. He articulated the band’s profound influence on his understanding of music, highlighting the monumental task of telling their story across multiple films.
Scheduled for a projected release in April 2028, the films will soon commence a year-long filming process. It remains uncertain whether all four titles will debut simultaneously or be staggered in weekly releases.
