“Mr. Know It All” is characterized by a blend of classic soul influences and a modern production style, marking a new chapter for the artist.
In a recent statement, Swims discussed the song’s theme, stating, “When you believe you already know how it ends, you protect yourself by holding back, and that distance becomes the reason it fails. But when you try to fight that fate and control every outcome, you can end up suffocating the connection.”
Swims elaborated on the deeper implications of the song, noting that it explores how fear and control can quietly undermine genuine relationships. He refers to this theme as a reflection on Robert K. Merton’s concepts of self-destroying prophecy versus self-fulfilling prophecy, also known as “The Prophet’s Dilemma.”
For “Mr. Know It All,” he collaborated with co-writers and producers Julian Bunetta, Ammo, and John Ryan, along with contributions from Eskeerdo and first-time collaborator Ed Drewett.
In the song, he expresses, “Shoulda told you I could see this coming / Like I’m lookin’ right into a crystal ball / When I fall in love it’s with misfortune / Oh, I wish I wasn’t Mr. Know It All.”
Born Jaten Dimsdale in 1992 in Conyers, Georgia, Swims made his Billboard chart debut in 2021 and gained significant attention with his track “Lose Control.” In 2025, he received a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist and became a record holder. “Lose Control” set a milestone as the first song in Billboard Hot 100 history to spend over 100 weeks on the chart, logging its 100th frame on July 26, 2025.
The single previously surpassed Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves,” which held the previous record of 91 weeks from 2021-2022. “Lose Control” has now accumulated 112 weeks on the tally.
Following Coachella, Swims is scheduled to perform at several major festivals, including Stagecoach, BottleRock, New Orleans Jazz Fest, and a headlining spot at Bonnaroo.
“Mr. Know It All” is now available for streaming.
