Sydney Sweeney Shares Insights on Her Subtle Change in ‘The Housemaid’
Sydney Sweeney Discusses Character Transformation in The Housemaid
Sydney Sweeney opened up about her character Millie’s transformation in the upcoming film The Housemaid during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, shared on TikTok on December 9. At 28, Sweeney emphasized the understated aesthetic of her character as she appears in the movie, stating, “This is my character look,” while showcasing a minimalist makeup style that reflects Millie’s persona.
When prompted about her character’s wardrobe, Sweeney expressed her desire for authenticity in Millie’s clothing choices. “I did not want every single outfit, every single day to be different,” she explained. “She has her staple pair of jeans, one jacket; she picked up stuff from the thrift store. She’s not going shopping and buying all these new products and pieces.”
Sweeney further elaborated on Millie’s practical approach to fashion, noting, “You’ll see Millie kind of mix and matches her outfits…this jacket [I’m wearing now] is starting to get holes in it. Like, this is Millie’s.”
The Housemaid follows Millie as she faces financial struggles and takes on a job as a live-in maid for the Winchester family, consisting of Nina (Amanda Seyfried), Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), and their daughter Cecelia (Indiana Elle).
In the interview, Sweeney also shared her passion for authenticity in storytelling, mentioning her advocacy for specific narrative elements throughout the film’s development. “I’m a huge book reader…where’s this? Where’s that? We have to keep this. We can’t change that,” she said, underscoring her commitment to the story and its fans.
As showcased in the film’s trailer, Sweeney begins with a simple look, including messy waves, eyeglasses, and casual attire. As the film progresses, Millie’s appearance evolves dramatically. She eventually descends a staircase in glamorous attire, featuring vibrant bouncy curls, dewy makeup, a white top with pearl buttons, and stylish accents.
This transformation is not new for Sweeney, who previously gained 30 pounds for her role as Christy Martin in the biopic Christy. She described her rigorous preparation, saying, “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”
The Housemaid is set to premiere in theaters on December 19.
