Stranger Things Star Reflects on Health Insurance Challenges During Cancer Treatment
While many fans of Stranger Things were left puzzled about the absence of Max’s mother during the series’ final season, few were as confused as actress Jennifer Marshall.
Marshall, who portrayed Susan Hargrove in Seasons 2 and 4 of the Netflix series, recently shared insight into her personal health journey. She revealed that returning for the final season could have been crucial in securing health insurance through SAG-AFTRA, particularly as she navigated the challenges of cancer treatment.
“I had cancer, I get it. But I was in remission during the shooting of season five,” she wrote on Instagram. “Shooting would have helped me obtain my health insurance through the union.”
In a light-hearted comment regarding the narrative choices, Marshall remarked, “Maybe they had too many characters, idk but obv Susan Hargrove is THE WORST MOTHER EVER LMAO.”
In an interview with People, she expressed her disappointment, noting that working on the Duffer Brothers show had been “the opportunity of a lifetime” and that she “would have been ecstatic to return” for the fifth season.
“It would have helped me not only financially but would have been a mental and emotional uplift after battling cancer for almost two years,” Marshall explained. “Either way, no one is entitled to a role, cancer or not. My heart remains grateful, and I will always give those involved in the decision-making the benefit of the doubt.”
In Stranger Things, Susan Hargrove was last seen in Season 4 grappling with alcoholism while trying to support Max from their trailer park home. The character’s form was taken by Vecna in one of Max’s dreams just before Max fell into a coma.
Although Stranger Things has reached its conclusion, fans can look forward to One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, which promises to provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the final season. The special will premiere on January 12 on Netflix.
