Stranger Things Season 5 Premiere Sets New Viewing Record for Streaming Shows
Stranger Things achieved a remarkable milestone with the premiere of its final season over the Thanksgiving holiday, generating an impressive 8.46 billion viewing minutes in its debut week, according to Nielsen’s latest report. This performance placed it well ahead of other streaming content from November 24 to 30.
This astounding figure marks the highest weekly viewing total ever for a streaming title, surpassing the previous record by more than 1 billion minutes. The previous record was also held by Stranger Things, which garnered 7.2 billion minutes during the premiere of its fourth season in 2022.
Nielsen reported that while it does not separate viewing totals by season, 57% of the total viewing minutes came from the new Season 5 episodes. Additionally, 59% of the viewership consisted of adults aged 18-49.
Comparing performances from previous seasons is challenging, as Netflix released Season 5 on a Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, whereas Season 4 debuted on a Friday at 3 a.m. ET. Nevertheless, this record is particularly impressive given that Season 5’s viewing total encompasses just over four days of availability for the new episodes and only four episodes were released. Comparatively, when seven episodes of Stranger Things 4 debuted together, the series didn’t achieve the record-breaking viewing total until the following week, from May 30 to June 5, after accumulating 5.14 billion minutes viewed in its first three days.
Weeks prior to the premiere, Stranger Things generated significant buzz, becoming the No. 3 title on Nielsen’s Top 10 list during the week of November 3 with 921 million minutes viewed. It reached the No. 1 spot the following week, amassing 1.3 billion minutes. In the week leading up to the Season 5 premiere, the series remained at No. 1, totaling 1.6 billion minutes viewed.
This momentum prepares Stranger Things for a strong showing during the upcoming Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve releases of the final episodes. Though Nielsen’s reports are typically delayed by a month, Netflix will provide viewership data for the remaining Season 5 episodes in the coming weeks.
Amidst the significant attention surrounding Stranger Things, Paramount+ made a noteworthy impact with the third episode of Landman Season 2, achieving No. 2 with 1.34 billion minutes viewed, while Netflix’s The Beast in Me secured the third position with 1.06 billion minutes. Notably, The Beast in Me creator Howard Gordon’s previous series, Homeland, also returned to the charts at No. 1 among acquired titles that week, attracting 855 million minutes viewed following its arrival on Netflix.
As expected, classic holiday films also made their annual appearance in the Nielsen rankings. The live-action version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas topped the chart with 669 million minutes viewed, followed by Home Alone with 499 million and Elf at 397 million.
