Stephen A. Smith Shares His Thoughts on Travis Kelce’s Possible Retirement in 2026 for Taylor Swift

Speculation regarding Travis Kelce’s retirement from the NFL has intensified, particularly now that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is engaged to singer Taylor Swift. With the Chiefs struggling this season, sports analyst Stephen A. Smith suggests that Kelce may be considering hanging up his jersey in the near future.
In an interview with People, published on December 9, Smith pointed to both Kelce’s evolving personal situation and a series of disappointing performances by the Chiefs as potential indicators that Kelce’s retirement could come soon. “I think that you could see the handwriting that’s on the wall,” he stated.
Smith also emphasized Kelce’s considerable talents and the opportunities that await him outside of football, remarking, “The guy is so talented, and there are so many other things that he could do outside of football that now would be the time for him to step away.” He acknowledged Kelce’s achievements, noting, “He’s still great. He’s a three-time champion… But Father Time is undefeated and eventually it creeps up on us all.”
Addressing Kelce’s prospects in entertainment, Smith added, “Obviously he has a beautiful lady in his life, where there’s a lot of good things for him to go home to.”
As of now, Billboard has reached out to Kelce’s representatives and the Chiefs for comments.
The Chiefs hold a 6-7 record after recently losing to the Houston Texans on December 7, a game that Swift attended alongside her friend, Selena Gomez. This season’s struggles starkly contrast with the team’s performance two years earlier, when they secured their second consecutive Super Bowl victory in 2024. They reached the championship game again in 2025 but fell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
At 36 years old, Kelce is currently in his 13th NFL season and has won a total of three Super Bowls. His older brother, Jason Kelce, retired from the Philadelphia Eagles after completing the same number of seasons in 2024.
