Screenwriter Anna Klassen to Adapt "The Surrogate Mother" for Film
Anna Klassen, a journalist turned screenwriter recognized for her work on The Last Sunrise, will be adapting the novel The Surrogate Mother into a screenplay. Marc Evans, known for his productions including The Gorge and The Old Guard, is set to produce the film.
The narrative follows Abby, a woman who has experienced years of struggle with infertility treatments and unsuccessful adoptions. Her path to motherhood seems nearly impossible until her personal assistant, Monica, presents a generous offer that could help Abby realize her dream of becoming a mother.
Originally self-published on October 10, 2018, The Surrogate Mother was re-released in paperback by Sourcebooks’ Poisoned Pen press on August 19, 2025. Recently, the novel has surged in popularity, making a strong comeback on various bestseller lists. It has reached the number one spot on The New York Times best sellers list, the UK’s Sunday Times, and Canada’s Globe and Mail.
Freida McFadden, the author of The Surrogate Mother, is known for her thrillers, including The Housemaid, which has been adapted into a film starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, and Brandon Sklenar. Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid is currently in theaters.
In addition, McFadden’s The Tenant is set for a film adaptation with Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and producer Scott Stuber. Another of her works, The Teacher, will be developed for Apple Original Films by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. Amazon MGM Studios is also working on a TV adaptation of McFadden’s novel Dear Debbie, with Gina Girolamo attached as executive producer.
Marc Evans is represented by UTA and Greenberg Glusker. The announcement of this project was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
