NEARLY REJECTED: A Directorial Insight
Despite the star power of Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman, the film Song Sung Blue faced significant hurdles during its development. Director Craig Brewer revealed that multiple studios declined to back the project, citing concerns that audiences would not connect with its Midwestern characters. "Everyone said no, and they were very, very vocal in saying no," Brewer stated in an interview with Variety.
Brewer elaborated on the rejection, explaining that some executives were critical of the characters’ living conditions, which they felt would alienate viewers. "They’d say, ‘Well, their house is cluttered and dirty.’ I was like, ‘Well, wait a minute. Hold on. These are some magical people. These are the type of people that I’m related to. This is like my grandmother’s house,’" he noted.
The film focuses on the lives of Mike and Claire Sardina, portrayed by Jackman and Hudson, respectively. The real-life couple gained recognition as a Neil Diamond tribute duo, operating under the name Lightning & Thunder.

Ultimately, Brewer expressed gratitude to Focus Features and Universal for recognizing the film’s potential. "I always face that," he said when questioned about whether "regional bias" influenced studio rejections. With a career marked by storytelling focused on Southern and African American narratives, Brewer explained that industry biases often dismiss these rich cultural histories.
In the case of Song Sung Blue, he noted, "Here I thought, there’s no Southern accents in it. It’s not particularly diverse. It’s about this White couple. Yet, that mentality still existed."
Hudson, 46, received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the film. She shared in W Magazine that she met the real-life Claire Sardina, stating, "You can’t believe what these people went through. When I read the script, I remember thinking, ‘This can’t all be true.’ I met Claire on set. She’s wonderful. I’m so lucky I got to play her." Jackman, 57, portrays Mike Sardina, who passed away in 2006.
As Song Sung Blue continues its theatrical run, its journey reflects deeper narratives about representation and the challenges faced by storytellers in the industry.
