Driver Charged After Fatal Crash Involving Hockey Team Van in Colorado
On January 29, 2026, a tragic accident occurred at approximately 8:53 a.m. on Interstate 70 near mile marker 218 in Clear Creek County, resulting in the death of a father and injuries to several others. The Colorado State Patrol reports that a snowplow operated by a Colorado Department of Transportation driver collided with a van carrying a girls hockey team from Santa Clarita.
The van was transporting ten individuals when it struck the snowplow. The driver of the van, identified as a parent of one of the players, was killed in the incident, while eight passengers sustained injuries. Among the injured were three members of the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers hockey team, as stated by the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The snowplow operator, 29-year-old Colton A. Wiedman, has been charged with one count of reckless driving resulting in death, classified as a Class 1 traffic misdemeanor. He also faces four additional counts of reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury, each of which is similarly classified as a Class 1 traffic misdemeanor.
