Shohei Ohtani’s First Home Run of the Season Ignites a Big Night for the Dodgers’ Offense
Ohtani’s Power Surge Leads Dodgers to Victory Over Nationals
WASHINGTON — In a much-anticipated display of offensive prowess, Shohei Ohtani stepped out of the batter’s box with confidence after launching a changeup for a three-run homer, marking his first extra-base hit of the season. This timely hit played a pivotal role in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 13-6 victory over the Washington Nationals.
Heading into the series, the trio of Ohtani, Kyle Tucker, and Mookie Betts had combined for a .541 OPS, the lowest among any National League team’s first three hitters. Freddie Freeman, batting in the fourth slot against Nationals right-hander Miles Mikolas, wasn’t faring much better, carrying a .615 OPS into Friday’s game.
However, the Dodgers’ top order turned the narrative at Nationals Park. Ohtani’s homer ignited a scoring surge, with Tucker adding a single followed by Betts’ two-run shot that sailed into the visitor’s bullpen.
Two innings later, Betts found success again with a single, paving the way for Freeman to blast a homer into the second deck. Tucker capped a four-run rally with a bases-loaded single. Taking advantage of Mikolas, who struggled with a 7.20 ERA last season, the Dodgers’ hitters finally showed the potential expected from their lineup.
In addition to Ohtani’s contributions, Andy Pages hit his second home run of the season, while Teoscar Hernández added an RBI double. The Dodgers tallied 11 runs against Mikolas in just 4 ⅓ innings.
Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan faced challenges early, allowing three runs in the first inning, including a homer to CJ Abrams. Despite this, Sheehan settled in, not allowing more runs before exiting with two outs in the sixth inning. Although the Nationals scored two late runs against reliever Edgardo Henriquez, a decisive comeback was never in sight.
In fitting fashion, Ohtani capped the Dodgers’ scoring with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in the ninth inning, further solidifying the team’s offensive turnaround.
