FX Expands Cast for Second Season of Emmy-Winning Series Shōgun
FX has announced an expanded cast for the upcoming second season of its acclaimed drama series Shōgun, adding newcomers Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi, and Takashi Yamaguchi. Production is currently underway in Vancouver.
These actors join previously confirmed cast members, including Emmy winner Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Fumi Nikaidô, and Ren Meguro, among others.
In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga, played by Sanada, navigated treacherous political waters as he battled enemies within the Council of Regents. The story intensified when an abandoned European ship surfaced, leading English pilot John Blackthorne, portrayed by Jarvis, to reveal crucial strategic secrets that shifted the power dynamics in Toranaga’s favor during a pivotal civil war.
Kukihara will portray the character Gabriel, while Satô takes on the role of Rin, Nishida will play Jōshin, Koichi assumes the character Saitō, and Yamaguchi will represent Kanō.
Shōgun, adapted from James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is produced by FX Productions and created for television by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who also serve as executive producers alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Sanada.
Casting for the second season is managed by Kei Kawamura and Laura Schiff, whose contributions to the first season earned them an Emmy for Outstanding Casting in a Drama Series.
The inaugural season of Shōgun received 18 Emmy Awards, breaking records for the most awards won by a series in a single season and marking FX’s first win for Outstanding Drama Series. Sanada made history as the first Japanese actor to win the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, while Anna Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to achieve the same honor. The series also garnered the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama and accolades from numerous other prestigious organizations, including SAG, WGA, DGA, and the Independent Spirit Awards.
Season 2 of Shōgun will be available for streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, with episodes airing on the FX channel.
