Sheriff’s Deputy Tragically Shot While Serving Eviction Notice in Central California
Man Fatally Shoots Deputy During Eviction Attempt in Porterville
A sheriff’s deputy in central California was shot and killed on Thursday morning while serving an eviction notice to a 60-year-old man in Porterville. The incident led to a prolonged standoff, ultimately ending with the man being fatally struck by an armored vehicle after fleeing the residence.
According to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting occurred as deputies approached the man, who then barricaded himself inside his home, armed with a rifle. The location of the standoff is about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles, in the state’s Central Valley.
Sheriff Mike Boudreaux reported that for several hours, the man exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. Authorities deployed gas into the home in an effort to persuade him to surrender. The standoff concluded around 6 PM when he left the house and entered the yards of nearby properties.
Boudreaux stated that a Kern County SWAT team responding to the situation utilized an armored vehicle. After the man began firing at them from the ground, the team ultimately drove over him, resulting in his death.
The sheriff revealed that the man had not paid rent for 35 days and was expecting law enforcement to issue a final eviction notice. He described how the suspect "lay in wait" and opened fire immediately upon the deputies’ arrival.
Despite efforts from the man’s family, who communicated with him and urged him to surrender peacefully, he refused their appeals, Boudreaux noted.
The deputy killed in the line of duty was identified as Detective Randy Hoppert, a Navy veteran who joined the Sheriff’s Department in 2020. Bystander video obtained by the Visalia Times-Delta captured the chaotic scene, showing armed deputies seeking cover as shots rang out. Additional footage depicted an individual being carried into an emergency medical vehicle.
"This is senseless," Boudreaux remarked, reflecting on the tragic circumstances surrounding the incident.
In the aftermath, residents in the vicinity were evacuated, while others were instructed to shelter in place for safety. Nearby schools were also placed on lockdown.
Miguel Ibarra, who lives across the street from the suspect, expressed shock at witnessing police activity in what he described as a typically quiet neighborhood. "The police did a really good job keeping us informed and keeping us in the know of what’s going on," he said.
