With a sense of amazement, reality star Serena Page shared her thoughts about her goddess braids, which captured the attention of viewers during her time on Love Island USA. Appearing on Refinery29’s Unbothered podcast Go Off, Sis, alongside her close friend JaNa Craig, Page reflected on their journey from the villa to emerging careers during a live recording at Beautycon.
As the winner of the show, Page’s ability to maintain her hair amidst humidity impressed fans. Her braids became more than just a style—they symbolized community and connection. A former braider, Page was surprised to see the impact her hairstyle had on viewers after returning home. She emphasized that trying out different looks is her personal form of self-expression.
“I simply didn’t feel like dealing with a lace for 10 weeks on the show,” she explained. “Braids are the only thing I can upkeep, and I needed something that I could switch up a lot. Before the villa, I had a new hairstyle every two weeks, and now it’s a little more frequent. I express myself through my hair.”
“
Despite the negativity, their sisterhood captivated viewers, becoming a fan favorite, often overshadowing the romantic drama.
”
Page’s enthusiasm for hair has propelled her entrepreneurial ambitions, leading to plans for a hair care brand aimed at addressing the unique needs of Black women and their protective styles, set to launch in 2025. She described the cultural significance of Black hairstyles, emphasizing their roots in African traditions passed down through generations.
Meanwhile, Craig has adapted her beauty regimen after the filming experience in Fiji, which involved long days under extreme conditions. She now embraces more natural makeup looks, incorporating blush and opting for natural lashes.
Addressing the topic of friendship, co-host Kathleen Newman Bremang highlighted the harsh reality of online trolls who targeted their friend Leah Kateb. Page defended Kateb, praising her loyalty. “Leah is more in our corner than anybody. I love Leah, and Leah loves us,” she remarked.
Reflecting on their time on Love Island USA, both Page and Craig acknowledged the unfortunate trend of early eliminations and struggles faced by Black women on reality dating shows. They entered the villa with modest expectations, but once they connected, they recognized that their experience would differ positively.
After the show, they not only formed a bond but also found love. Page and her partner Kordell Beckham have collaborated with various brands, including Spotify and Dunkin’ Donuts. Regarding brand partnerships, Page stressed that they ensure alignment with their values while Craig echoed similar sentiments about collaborating with her boyfriend, Kenny Rodriguez.
Craig also shared her past experiences as a lash business owner and real estate investor, encouraging viewers to pursue their passions, as the paths may lead to unexpected opportunities.
“
Unlike most cases, Page and Craig didn’t have to choose between leaving with a romantic partner or financial security. They secured both.
”
As their influence continues to expand, Page and Craig aim to inspire future creators. They highlight the challenges Black women face in the industry and stress the importance of staying genuine to oneself. Their key advice for aspiring influencers emphasizes creativity, courage, and commitment to one’s craft.
“You’ve got to be consistent,” Craig advised. “You’ve got to take the risks in life. You only have one life to live. And if you fail, at least when you’re 90 years old, you can look back and be proud that you tried rather than live with regret.”
Stepping onto Love Island USA as two of the few Black women, Page and Craig challenged historical portrayals of Black women on reality television. By embracing their authentic selves, they are setting a new standard for future reality TV, demonstrating that success does not require compromising one’s identity. Ultimately, they achieved a unique accomplishment: securing both romantic and financial fulfillment.
