Scott MacFarlane Shares His Journey from CBS News to MeidasTouch: A Q&A on His New Chapter
Scott MacFarlane, a former correspondent for CBS News, has announced his new role at MeidasTouch, a digital media outlet known for its critical coverage of Donald Trump. This shift comes less than two weeks after MacFarlane’s initial announcement about leaving CBS News.
MacFarlane’s move reflects a broader trend in which established journalists are transitioning to digital platforms that offer a more explicit ideological perspective. MeidasTouch, which originated from a political action committee, has cultivated an audience on the left and generated significant engagement, recently ranking among the top YouTube podcasts, surpassing offerings from prominent figures like Joe Rogan and Candace Owens.
In his introduction video, MacFarlane articulated his vision for his role, stating he is "not an opinionist, not an editorialist." He will serve as the chief Washington correspondent and will host a daily program titled Scott MacFarlane Reports. MacFarlane plans to focus on coverage from Capitol Hill and the Justice Department, areas he previously reported on at CBS, alongside the upcoming midterms.
MacFarlane expressed concerns about media organizations with a clear bias, saying, “No matter one’s point of view, I’m concerned by joining an organization that does not have a point of view, because you have to have a point of view to ensure that you’re not platforming and perpetuating conspiracy theories and lies and whitewashing.” He emphasized that integrity remains paramount in reporting.
He aims to provide thorough reporting to either confirm or challenge the opinions of his audience. “The value I bring to their audience is that they are going to get reporting from me to inform,” he noted.
Digital platforms like The Bulwark and Zeteo News have attracted attention for their analytical and opinion-focused content regarding Trump, paralleling the trajectory of MeidasTouch. The latter positions itself as a "pro-democracy news network" and has expanded its staff with notable hires, including MacFarlane, who has gained acclaim for his extensive coverage of events following January 6th.
MacFarlane’s departure has not been without criticism, notably from the Trump administration, which accused him of bias. MacFarlane, however, remains focused on his commitment to factual reporting. “Hopefully the work will speak for itself,” he said.
Reflecting on the motivations that led him to MeidasTouch, MacFarlane remarked on the shared audience interested in critical political analysis. He described his shift as a chance to reach a wider audience and report without the constraints often found in traditional media.
Regarding his editorial freedom, MacFarlane stated, "The mission is to be independent. This is unfiltered news." He expressed enthusiasm for the limitless opportunities to report continuously, a stark contrast to the time constraints he faced at CBS.
As for CBS News, MacFarlane believes that the key to its success lies in producing unique content, avoiding commodification of news. "As long as they do that, there’s limitless upside," he asserted.
MacFarlane’s journey to MeidasTouch marks another significant chapter in the evolving landscape of journalism, highlighting the shifting dynamics as digital platforms gain prominence in delivering news and commentary.
