Sat Bisla Shares Insights from 40 Years in Music Before MUSEXPO 2026: The Joy of Lifelong Learning
Sat Bisla: Connecting the Global Music Landscape
Sat Bisla, a prominent figure in the music industry, has dedicated much of his 40-year career to bridging connections within a constantly evolving market. As the founder of A&R Worldwide, he has cultivated relationships that span from Los Angeles and London to burgeoning music hubs in Asia and Africa. His efforts have significantly influenced the careers of numerous artists and provided strategic insights to industry executives adapting to shifting global markets.
These extensive connections paved the way for MUSEXPO, the annual conference launched by Bisla in 2003. Now in its 26th year, this Burbank-based gathering has gained a reputation for fostering collaboration among A&R leaders, managers, publishers, tech innovators, and artists. MUSEXPO emphasizes relationship-building, often resulting in partnerships and business deals.
The upcoming 2026 edition of MUSEXPO is set to attract a diverse range of stakeholders from the global music ecosystem. Notable speakers will include Mo Ghoneim, president of Billboard U.K. and Billboard Canada, among others, who will discuss the future of music and innovation.
Reflecting on the origins of MUSEXPO, Bisla noted that its inception was quite informal. “Honestly, that was another thing that happened purely accidentally and organically,” he said, recalling how a small dinner for industry colleagues evolved into a major conference. The pivotal moment came when BBC Radio 1 executive, Alex Jones-Donnelly, attended one of those dinners and encouraged Bisla to scale up the concept. “He said, ‘Look, I get more insights and more business done at your dinners than any conference I’ve ever attended.’”
More than two decades later, that ethos remains integral to MUSEXPO, which aims not just to be another industry summit, but a space where meaningful relationships and ideas can flourish.
In an exclusive interview with Billboard UK ahead of MUSEXPO 2026, Bisla discussed his lengthy career, the changing landscape of artist discovery, and the influence of artificial intelligence on music.
Career Foundations
When asked about his journey in the music industry, Bisla attributed his initial interest to his passion for music. “I was always a music fan. My first professional entry points into the music were through radio when I was a teenager,” he explained, sharing how he approached local DJs to introduce them to artists he had discovered in the U.K.
Passion for the Industry
Reflecting on his long tenure in the industry, Bisla emphasized the importance of continuous learning. “I think the one thing that keeps me passionate…is being a constant student,” he said. This dedication to learning has allowed him to stay relevant as the industry evolves.
Approach to A&R and Artist Discovery
Bisla noted that his radio experience shaped his approach to A&R and artist discovery. He highlighted the need to cater to audience preferences rather than personal tastes. “If you’re going to play unfamiliar music, make sure it sounds familiar,” he recalled, a mantra that continues to guide his work today.
Championing New Talent
Throughout his career, Bisla has had an eye for emerging talent, mentioning bands like Muse and Coldplay as examples where he recognized their potential early on. He also recalled his early support for Adele, highlighting the importance of believing in artists before they gain recognition.
The Role of Social Media
Recognizing the transformative impact of social media on artist discovery, Bisla acknowledged the benefits of platforms like TikTok and Instagram. However, he still values the insights gained from live performances and personal interactions with artists.
Industry Challenges
Bisla expressed concerns about the industry’s approach to nurturing new talent, differentiating between those focused on music itself and those treating it solely as a business. He urged a return to a more artist-centered perspective.
Global Focus
His global perspective developed in the late ’90s, when he began assisting industry professionals in understanding emerging markets. He shared his early engagements in regions like China and South Korea, fostering a long-term commitment to exploring international music landscapes.
Investing in India’s Music Scene
Bisla’s commitment to India grew around 2008 when he recognized its potential beyond Bollywood. He has since worked with local innovators to help build the modern Indian music framework.
Unique MUSEXPO Experience
Describing MUSEXPO, Bisla stated, “The vibe is very different. People are much more relaxed and open to talking with each other.” This welcoming atmosphere fosters genuine connections among attendees.
The Future of AI in Music
Looking ahead, Bisla views artificial intelligence as an opportunity rather than a threat to the music industry, likening it to ketchup that enhances the flavor rather than the main dish.
Ongoing Motivation
Finally, when asked about his personal motivation, Bisla spoke of the importance of family and making a positive impact on others. He continues to strive for positive change amid global challenges, believing that chaos often brings opportunities.
As MUSEXPO 2026 approaches, Bisla’s insights and experiences serve as a testament to his enduring commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration within the music industry.
