Sarah Michelle Gellar Shares Concerns About ‘Buffy’ Reboot Pilot Leaking and Sparking Opinions
Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms Cancellation of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot at Hulu
Sarah Michelle Gellar has announced that the much-anticipated reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will not proceed to series on Hulu. This news has disappointed many fans who were eager to see Gellar reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers.
Following the cancellation, there were hopes within the fan community that the pilot directed by Chloé Zhao might eventually be leaked. However, Gellar has expressed concern about this possibility, stating it would be a disservice to fans. In an interview on SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio, she explained her reservations: “I actually hope it doesn’t because then everyone’s going to have an opinion on this and that, and pilots are not finished… It’s not like we did a season, finished it, and then they shelved it.”
Gellar emphasized that the effort was intentional and that the pilot was designed to introduce new characters and concepts. “We made a pilot on purpose because there are some new characters, and you want to see how it goes. And there are things you learn from it, and there are things you fix,” she added.
Reflecting on the nature of pilot episodes, Gellar noted that they often serve as learning tools rather than complete representations of a show. “Usually, a pilot doesn’t air in its entirety ever,” she commented. She compared the current situation to the original Buffy pilot, which featured different characters and was markedly different from what fans ultimately came to know and love. “It was a very different show, but those are learning tools, and that’s what a pilot is,” she said.
Gellar also urged fans to exercise caution regarding leaked scripts, stating, “I’ve seen a version of the script out there. It’s not actually correct… I ask fans if you see scripts, if you see it leaked, don’t watch it because you’re not getting our visions and all of that.”
In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Gellar confirmed that Buffy: New Sunnydale would not be moving forward. She thanked Zhao, stating, “I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,” while affirming her affection for the character and the franchise.
The pilot featured Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new slayer, alongside a cast that included Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott, with Chase Sui Wonders in a guest role.
