San Fernando Valley Hockey Community Comes Together to Preserve Historic Ice Rink
LA Kings Valley Ice Center Faces Demolition Threat
LOS ANGELES – The LA Kings Valley Ice Center, a longstanding fixture in the San Fernando Valley and significant contributor to local youth sports, is set to undergo partial demolition on May 1. Local residents fear that this development could dismantle a cherished community hub.
The planned demolition targets key areas, including the Glacier sheet, the main lobby, and the Natty Hatty Proshop. For years, the facility has been known as the "Home of the California Heat," a youth hockey program that has successfully prepared athletes for the NHL, NCAA, and major junior leagues such as the USHL and NAHL. Beyond serving elite players, the center functions as a gathering place for school events and recreational leagues.
Supporters emphasize the ice center’s role in fostering invaluable life skills among young athletes. "It is a home for thousands of kids who have learned discipline, teamwork, and resilience through hockey," noted Rachel from Studio City. She added, "For my family, it is where my son discovered his love for the sport."
Jennifer from Castaic described the facility as "a special place for the hockey community," stressing the negative impact that losing it would have on local hockey players and figure skaters. Melanie expressed similar sentiments, stating, "This ice rink is a cornerstone of our local community. Losing a facility like this would be a devastating blow to everyone who relies on it for recreation and connection."
In an effort to preserve the facility, community members have initiated a petition urging local government officials and philanthropists to invest in renovations or consider relocation options. Their objective is to strike a balance that modernizes the center without erasing its historical significance.
