Sam Asghari has addressed Britney Spears’ recent arrest for suspicion of DUI during an interview with Fox News. This marks his first comments on the matter since the incident occurred.
In a conversation with Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt on Friday, March 6, Asghari, who was married to Spears from 2022 to 2024, voiced his perspective toward the end of the segment.
“My full attention has gone to Iran at the moment,” he stated. “When it comes to people making mistakes, I understand that, but I think everybody deserves privacy. And I hope the press has learned from the past [and] that they give her the privacy that she needs.”
Spears was arrested on Wednesday in Ventura County, California, as confirmed by the county’s Sheriff’s Office. According to records, the singer was taken into custody at 9:28 p.m. PT and booked at 3:02 a.m. PT. She was released at 6:07 a.m. PT the following day, with a court date set for May 4.
A spokesperson for Spears characterized the situation as “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.” The representative added, “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”
Spears has had a tumultuous legal history, including a hit-and-run case in 2007 that was dismissed the following year. This incident preceded her widely publicized 13-year conservatorship. More recently, reports from Variety reveal that the Grammy-winning artist sold the rights to her entire music catalog to Primary Wave for approximately $200 million.
While part of the Fox News conversation reflected Asghari’s reality television background, he primarily discussed the ongoing situation in Iran. He expressed solidarity with Iranians and Iranian-Americans amidst the conflicts that began on February 28.
“It’s been 47 years since the Iranian people have been fighting this fight against the regime,” said Asghari, who originated from Tehran and moved to the United States at age 12. “The difference between Iran’s government and its people is miles far… our understanding, our culture, even the language they speak is completely different. The people of Iran are in love with America. They love America just like I do… I’m happy this situation is happening to make it clear to this world that we stand with America and we stand with the free world.”
Asghari and Spears first met on the set of the music video for her 2016 song “Slumber Party.” They became engaged in September 2021 and signed a prenuptial agreement, which received public endorsement from Oscar winner Octavia Spencer on social media. Spears announced her pregnancy in April 2022, but she suffered a miscarriage a month later. After marrying on June 8, 2022, the couple remained together for a year before separating in July 2023. Asghari filed for divorce the following month, citing irreconcilable differences, with the divorce officially finalized on December 2, 2024—the same day as Spears’ 43rd birthday.
Asghari’s comments come amidst critical and challenging circumstances for both him and Spears.
