Sabrina Carpenter Responds to Criticism Over Her ‘Manchild’ Lyrics
Trending on Billboard
On Tuesday, March 17, Sabrina Carpenter addressed a critical comment on X regarding the lyrics of her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Manchild.” The exchange has sparked considerable online discussion.
A post by X user @uncledoomer stated, “Women are always like ‘men are useless’ but Sabrina Carpenter is like 4 foot 11, she can even climb into a mid-size SUV without help.” This comment followed a now-viral video from Carpenter’s performance at Lollapalooza Argentina on March 15, where she engaged the crowd in a call-and-response section of the song.
In the clip, Carpenter asks the crowd, “What do you call it?” and they respond, “Stupid!” When she queries, “Or is it?” the audience replies, “Slow!” The exchange culminates with Carpenter contemplating, “Well maybe it’s …” leading the crowd to shout, “Useless!”
The video, captioned “Sabrina Carpenter at Lollapalooza having over 100K people call men ‘USELESS!’,” has received over 200,000 likes as of press time.
In response to the original post about her ability to get into a vehicle, Carpenter simply stated, “Yes I can ?” This tweet quickly garnered more than 735,000 likes and 7,000 replies within a day.

Supporters of Carpenter were quick to defend her. One user remarked, “She didn’t [say] men are useless; she’s talking about the ‘manchild’ in the song being useless. But if you got identified … Oh well.” Another fan posted, “How does it feel to be ended by the queen herself?”
This incident is not the first time Carpenter has used X to assert herself. In December, she criticized the White House for using her Hot 100 track “Juno” in a video related to ICE raids, labeling it “evil and disgusting.” Following her remarks, which received nearly 2 million likes, the White House removed the video from its account.
