Marc Jacobs recently engaged in a thought-provoking interview with singer Sabrina Carpenter for the April 7 issue of Perfect.
During their conversation, Jacobs asked Carpenter to share her thoughts on the significance of a queer audience in today’s pop music landscape. Carpenter responded thoughtfully, stating, “I don’t think pop music would exist if it wasn’t for the queer community. I don’t think some of our greatest pop stars would exist if it wasn’t for the queer community.”
She further expressed her deep connection to the LGBTQ+ community, noting, “I feel so deeply connected. I mean, some of my greatest friends and collaborators and artists that I know are a part of the queer community or are just so celebratory of it.”
As she prepares to headline Coachella, Carpenter emphasized the joy that the queer community brings to her work. “I don’t think going on tour would be as fun without them,” she remarked.
Carpenter expressed gratitude for the community’s presence in her journey, concluding, “I feel so connected and grateful to be able to have them be a part of my journey, to be a part of the world.” Jacobs, a prominent gay figure, concurred, stating, “Life is much more [colorful] and fun with [the queer community]. It’s important sometimes to say it. Especially now.”
Carpenter is known for her vocal support of the LGBTQ+ community. Last year, she partnered with the non-profit PLUS1, raising over $1 million for mental health initiatives, LGBTQ+ rights, and animal welfare. This effort made The Sabrina Carpenter Fund the fastest-growing artist fund under the organization.
In her artistic endeavors, Carpenter has spotlighted LGBTQ+ voices, notably including openly queer Academy Award-winning actor Colman Domingo in her “Tears” music video. Inspired by the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the video featured Domingo as Carpenter’s drag mother. During her performance at the VMAs the following month, Carpenter shared the stage with drag artists and trans dancers, showcasing signs that read, “Protect Trans Rights,” “Support Local Drag,” and “Dolls! Dolls! Dolls!”
Carpenter is set to headline Coachella on Friday, April 8. Speculation surrounds her performance, labeled “her most ambitious show ever,” with anticipation that she may invite some of her past collaborators from earlier performances to join her on stage.
