Ryan Gosling Shares Heartfelt Thoughts on Fatherhood Tied to ‘Project Hail Mary’
Ryan Gosling Highlights Family Connection to Project Hail Mary
Ryan Gosling recently shared insights about a meaningful connection between his daughters and his latest film project, Project Hail Mary. During an appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, Gosling expressed his desire to create lasting memories in movie theaters with his children, akin to experiences he had in his own youth.
Gosling, 45, mentioned, "Eva and I would love to have one of those core memory moments in a movie theater with our kids, like we had them as kids. We haven’t really had that. So much of what they see or that’s out there seems like it’s designed to scare them. There’s a sense of hopelessness about it."
Anticipation builds for Project Hail Mary, an adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2021 science fiction novel, which is set to be released in theaters on March 20. Gosling, who is also a producer on the film, invested six years into its development. He referred to the film as something intended not only for his daughters, Esmeralda, 11, and Amada, 9, but for their entire generation, aiming to inspire interest in science and to reaffirm human potential.
"We wanted to make something that was — not just for them — and, not to be too lofty, but for their generation," Gosling said. "Something that was about science and about making STEM cool and believe in the competency of human beings."
In Project Hail Mary, Gosling portrays Dr. Ryland Grace, a scientist who awakens on a spaceship with no recollection of how he arrived there. The film follows his quest to save Earth, during which he forms a friendship with an alien named Rocky.
Gosling reflected on the character’s journey, stating, "Even individually, which is the journey of this character. He doesn’t believe in himself. He realizes that he’s capable of great things, and that’s true for all of us."
Bringing Grace to life on screen posed some challenges for Gosling, particularly regarding the character’s appearance. Initially resistant to the "cliché" of a bespectacled scientist, he eventually embraced the idea after encouragement from his daughter. "I was playing with the character and I threw on some glasses," he recalled. “My daughter was like, ‘You do look smarter in glasses.’ I was like, then I will be wearing them. Thank you.”
As fans await the film’s debut, early reviews suggest that it has successfully captured the essence of Weir’s beloved novel. Gosling acknowledged the protective nature of the book’s fans and expressed admiration for Weir’s unique storytelling. "What Andy does, which I find really special, is that he gives us an opportunity to pivot from that narrative and see the future as something that’s not necessarily something to fear," he remarked.
With Project Hail Mary, Gosling hopes to offer audiences a narrative filled with hope and inspiration rather than despair, aiming to create a film that resonates with both his daughters and a broader audience.
