Rozzi’s ‘Fig Tree’: A Unique Art and Music Experience in Downtown LA
Rozzi Launches Immersive Art and Music Residency in Downtown Los Angeles
Singer-songwriter Rozzi is enhancing the launch of her latest album with an innovative six-week residency in Downtown Los Angeles, combining live performances and visual art inspired by her music. The residency, hosted at LAX, runs weekly through Thursday, June 11, and coincides with the release of her third studio album, "Fig Tree," which debuted on May 8.
Every Thursday night, attendees can enjoy live performances, a curated art gallery, and surprise guest appearances. This residency showcases 26 original artworks created by various artists who drew inspiration directly from the songs on "Fig Tree." Guests can engage with the art while listening to the corresponding tracks via MP3 players provided alongside each piece.
"It was really fun to create an in-person experience that was so collaborative," Rozzi shared. "I think people enjoyed coming together and experiencing multiple forms of art among their community."
The next performance is set for Thursday, May 21, with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the show starting at 8 p.m. Additional performances are scheduled for May 28, June 4, and June 11.
The idea for the residency originated nearly a year ago, when over 500 artists submitted proposals to create artwork inspired by Rozzi’s album. A panel of celebrity judges, including Gia Coppola, Simon Le Bon, Julian Lennon, and Kiersey Clemons, selected the featured artists.
"We wanted variety, different mediums, different perspectives," Rozzi explained. "I didn’t want the pieces to be all about me, even though they’re inspired by my music. I wanted it to be a really collaborative show."
This residency follows a successful debut last year at Ki Smith Gallery in New York, where each performance sold out. The Los Angeles iteration includes both returning artists and new talent, offering updated works for attendees.
"A lot of the artwork sold in New York, and a lot of artists just chose to make new work," Rozzi noted.
Highlighted pieces in the exhibition include "Cloud 10" by Alejandra Calatayud and "Hard Things" by Denisse Griselda Reyes, among others.
Alongside the gallery exhibit, Rozzi performs her full album during the first part of the evening before transitioning to a more informal afterparty performance featuring songs from her broader catalog and guest appearances. The album explores themes of adulthood, change, and uncertainty, reflecting Rozzi’s personal journey as she navigates her 30s.
"I really strongly felt myself truly becoming an adult," she remarked. "It was kind of an awareness of the choices in front of me that might dictate the rest of my life."
The album’s title draws inspiration from Sylvia Plath’s "The Bell Jar," particularly its famous fig tree metaphor, which speaks to the pressure surrounding life choices and uncertain futures.
In addition to her music, Rozzi hosts a public book club on Instagram that aligns with the themes in her work, with this month’s selection being "The Bell Jar."
"I like to post whatever I love. Books give me so much joy," she said.
Rozzi hopes that visitors leave the residency with a sense of connection, not only to her music but also to the artwork and experiences it conveys. "I hope people feel recognized. I hope people relate to it all," she said. "I hope they see their own life in the music and that the songs can help them feel all those feelings that are coming up naturally for them. I hope they have a good time too. I love when people have fun."
