Robert Glasper Reflects on 16th Grammy Nomination and Career Journey
Veteran musician Robert Glasper has garnered significant attention following the announcement of his 16th Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Jazz Album for Keys to the City Volume One. The nomination was revealed on November 7, and Glasper, 47, expressed that he does not take this recognition lightly.
"It’s always a compliment," Glasper told PEOPLE. "The fact that the Grammys and the voting members feel I’m in that elite class… I remember the days where no one cared."
Throughout his illustrious career, Glasper has secured five Grammy wins and an Emmy award for his contributions to music. His work includes composing the original score for Issa Rae’s The Photograph, playing keyboard on Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed album To Pimp a Butterfly, and collaborating with notable artists such as Mac Miller and Anderson .Paak.
Growing up in Houston, Glasper was introduced to music through his mother, a singer and pianist. He fondly recalls attending her gigs as a child, an experience that profoundly influenced his path. "In high school, I thought I was going to be a basketball player," he said, laughing. "But it became clear I needed to shift focus."
Now, Glasper aims to create music that resonates with him and collaborates with inspiring individuals. He acknowledges a pivotal connection with friend and fellow musician Norah Jones, who played an integral role in his career’s early beginnings. "When she blew up, it allowed me to be signed without them realizing it," Glasper said.
Reflecting on his Grammy journey, Glasper indicated that each nomination remains significant. "It’s never going to get old. I’m always going to be happy about it and excited," he stated, indicating the importance of these accolades in acknowledging his artistry.
Looking ahead, Glasper emphasizes the value of authenticity over trends in the music industry. "If you stay true to yourself, you’ll endure," he advised younger artists. As Glasper continues to explore new musical landscapes, he finds inspiration in the connections he forms, allowing the universe to guide his creative journey.
"The universe is my co-producer," he noted, revealing his approach to making music. "I trust myself and the people around me—and that’s where the magic happens."
As he embarks on this next chapter, Glasper prioritizes creating meaningful art on his own terms, steering the course of his career intentionally.
