Richard Armitage and Annabel Scholey Star in the New PBS & ITV Police Drama ‘Winter’
Richard Armitage, known for his role in Fool Me Once, and Annabel Scholey of Rivals will star in a new police procedural series for PBS Masterpiece and ITV, centered on a talented pathologist.
Titled Winter, the show is adapted from the long-running French series Balthazar. It follows Ethan Winter, an analytical pathologist whose deductive skills align perfectly with DI Lauren Bell, played by Scholey. Together, they utilize Winter’s insights into victimology while navigating the complexities of their cases. However, Winter is burdened by a personal tragedy: the unresolved murder of someone dear to him continues to haunt him.
Winter represents the latest collaboration between PBS and ITV, following successful series such as Downton Abbey, Grantchester, and Professor T. Produced by ITV Studios-owned Eagle Eye, the series draws on the company’s expertise in adapting European shows for the UK market, including Professor T and The Couple Next Door.

Susanne Simpson, head of scripted content at Masterpiece, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “The team behind Winter are second to none and the ambition of David Allison’s scripts is very exciting and will attempt to shake up the genre that we’ve grown to love,” she stated. “Ethan Winter is a compelling character treading the line between diligent professional and reckless maverick. He has a painful secret and a fatalistic self-destruct button over which his finger constantly hovers.”
Directed by Dries Vos and Kaat Beels, with producing efforts from Matt Baker, Winter has its adaptations credited to David Allison and Mark Greig. Executive producers Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino will oversee the series for Eagle Eye. Filming is set to commence in early 2026 in Bristol and Belgium, with support from the Belgian Tax Shelter.
