Reviews of ‘Campeón Gabacho’ and ‘Their Town’: Heartfelt Films Showcasing Family Bonds at SXSW
As SXSW comes to a close, a prominent trend emerges: films showcasing strong familial connections behind the scenes. Recently, the film Family Movie drew attention, directed and produced by Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, featuring their two grown children, Sosie and Travis Bacon, in leading roles. Two additional films highlighted at the festival further reinforce this theme of inherited talent. Campeón Gabacho, directed by Jonás Cuarón, the son of Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, won the audience award at SXSW. Meanwhile, Their Town features the directorial debut of Katie Aselton and the film’s writers, including Mark Duplass, who together produced the film starring their daughter, Ora Duplass.
‘Campeón Gabacho‘
Directed by Jonás Cuarón, Campeón Gabacho tells the poignant story of Liborio, a young Mexican immigrant grappling with bullying and hardship. The film depicts Liborio’s perilous journey across the Rio Grande in search of a better life, echoing the dreams and struggles of many immigrants facing adversity under current political circumstances.

In this beautifully stylized film, co-written by Cuarón and Aura Xilonen, Liborio’s aspirations collide with challenging realities in a Latino neighborhood of New York City. Portrayed by Juan Daniel Garcia Trevino, Liborio’s life takes a downward turn when his bookstore job is abruptly terminated due to arson. Facing shattered self-esteem, he discovers new purpose and confidence through boxing, guided by Abacuc (Rubén Blades), who recognizes his potential beyond the life of a struggling immigrant.
Cuarón’s striking vision is enhanced by exceptional production design from Fernanda Guerrero and cinematography by Pepe Alvina del Pino, created on a soundstage in Mexico. The film juxtaposes Liborio’s harsh realities against a dreamlike interpretation of his experiences, with moments of surrealism that highlight his longing for joy amidst hardship.
The film evokes comparisons to Elia Kazan’s America America and Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, while blending elements reminiscent of the classic Rocky narrative. Ultimately, it presents a unique and emotionally resonant portrayal of the immigrant experience, especially significant during tumultuous times.

‘Their Town‘
Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton, both veterans of the independent film movement, take on a new venture with Their Town, featuring their daughter Ora Duplass in her film debut. The 80-minute feature centers on Abby, a high school student involved in a production of Our Town. Following her boyfriend’s abrupt withdrawal from the play, a new co-star, Matt (Chosen Jacobs), enters the scene, prompting their connection to develop during a memorable night exploring Bangor, Maine.
The film unfolds as a dialogue-driven experience akin to Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise trilogy, albeit focusing on teenagers confronting the challenges of adolescence. Mark Duplass’ sensitive script captures the nuances of youth, reflecting his experiences as a father to daughters. Ora delivers an exquisite performance as Abby, imbuing her character with a blend of innocence, curiosity, and unexpected wisdom. Chosen Jacobs matches her with authenticity, making their dynamic feel genuine and relatable.
Nevertheless, the narrative takes a melodramatic turn as Matt faces a confrontation with Abby’s ex-boyfriend, an event that feels somewhat at odds with the film’s overall tone. The heart of the film lies in its authentic conversations rather than conflicts, making this indie feature both charming and evocative.
