Remembering Hall of Fame Coach Bob Johnson: A Legacy in High School Football
Legendary High School Football Coach Bob Johnson Passes Away at 80
Bob Johnson, a Hall of Fame high school football coach renowned for transforming El Toro and Mission Viejo into elite football programs, has died at the age of 80 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. His passing occurred early Wednesday morning, prompting an outpouring of condolences from the community.
Mission Viejo football coach Chad Johnson, who is not related to Bob Johnson, expressed his sympathy for the family, saying, “I feel for the family.”
Over the course of his distinguished career, Bob Johnson won six Southern Section titles at Mission Viejo and three at El Toro, amassing an impressive 338 victories. This achievement ranks him as the second-winningest coach in Orange County history and places him among the top five in the state, as reported by the Orange County Register.
Former Santa Margarita coach Harry Welch paid tribute to Johnson, stating, “I think he was one of the greatest high school coaches in Southern California history.” Welch reminisced about a memorable passing tournament where he and Johnson’s intense competitiveness nearly escalated but ultimately resulted in a bonding experience.
Johnson concluded his coaching career after the 2017 season and was inducted into the California High School Football Hall of Fame in 2023.
His legacy continues with his two sons, Rob and Bret, both of whom were prominent high school quarterbacks before continuing their education at USC and UCLA, respectively. Rob later furthered his career in the NFL and currently serves as an assistant coach at Mission Viejo.
