Eric Overmyer, Esteemed TV Writer and Playwright, Passes Away at 74
Eric Overmyer, a distinguished television writer-producer and playwright, died on March 16 after a prolonged illness. He was 74 years old. Overmyer earned acclaim for his contributions to several iconic series, including Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, The Wire, Treme, Bosch, and Bosch: Legacy.
A graduate in theater, Overmyer began his career as a writer on the series St. Elsewhere. His notable progress in the industry began when he joined NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street during its fourth season in 1996. Overmyer remained with the show until its conclusion, serving as a co-writer and executive producer for Homicide: The Movie.
During his tenure on Homicide, Overmyer collaborated with writer-producer David Simon, with whom he developed a strong friendship. This relationship led to Overmyer’s involvement as a writer in the fourth season of Simon’s acclaimed HBO series The Wire, which debuted in 2006.
Together, Simon and Overmyer co-created and executive produced Treme, a post-Katrina HBO drama influenced by Overmyer’s experiences in New Orleans, which aired from 2010 to 2014.
Most recently, Overmyer was the creator of Bosch, based on the novels by Michael Connelly. He served as the show’s executive producer and showrunner, contributing significantly to the series that became Prime Video’s longest-running series over seven seasons. He also co-created and executive produced the spinoff Bosch: Legacy, featuring Titus Welliver reprising his role, which aired for three seasons from 2014 to 2021.
Overmyer’s extensive series credits also included a four-season run on NBC’s Law & Order, where he served as executive producer, as well as stints on Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. His writing credits extended to the 1998 ABC movie Rear Window, starring Christopher Reeve, and the 2016 National Geographic miniseries Saints & Strangers.
"Not only was Eric a superbly talented writer, he was just one of those people everyone loved," said Dick Wolf, creator of Law & Order and head of its franchise. "We are all going to miss him."
Overmyer received numerous accolades throughout his career, including four Emmy nominations, five Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award nominations, and a WGA Award win in 2016 for Saints & Strangers. He was also honored with a Humanitas Prize.
In addition to his television work, Overmyer was a prolific playwright, contributing to various Off Broadway and regional theater productions. His notable stage works include On the Verge; or, The Geography of Yearning (1985), In a Pig’s Valise (1989), Mi Vida Loca (1990), The Heliotrope Bouquet by Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin (1993), and Dark Rapture (1996). In 2000, he also contributed additional text for the Broadway production of the musical The Green Bird.
