Remembering Asha Bhosle: Celebrating the Life of a Bollywood Legend at 92
Asha Bhosle, the iconic Bollywood playback singer who lent her voice to over 2,000 films, has passed away at the age of 92. She died on Sunday in a Mumbai hospital after suffering a heart attack, as reported by The Times of India. Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans celebrating her 80-year career.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Smt. Asha Bhosle ji, one of India’s most renowned and versatile voices. Her unique musical journey spanning decades has enriched our cultural heritage and touched the hearts of countless people around the world. From soulful melodies to spirited compositions, her voice carried a timeless brilliance. I will forever cherish the memories of my conversations with her.”
He further expressed, “My heartfelt condolences to her family, fans, and music lovers. She will continue to inspire future generations, and her songs will forever resonate in people’s lives.”
Born on September 8, 1933, in Goar, Sangli State, Bhosle hailed from a prominent musical family. She began her career singing ‘Chala Chala Nav Bala’ in the film Majha Bal (1943) before making her Hindi film debut with ‘Saawan Aaya’ in Hansraj Behl’s Chunariya (1948).

Bhosle gained prominence in B.R. Chopra’s Naya Daur (1957), performing several songs composed by the director. She also collaborated on notable tracks for Chopra’s films such as Gumrah (1963), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1967), and Dhund (1973).
Her partnership with composer R.D. Burman began with the 1958 film Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and continued until their marriage in 1980.
In addition to her singing career, Bhosle made her acting debut in Badi Maa (1945) and appeared in various films throughout her life.
Throughout her illustrious career, Bhosle received numerous accolades, including awards from India’s National Film Awards, BFJA Awards, Maharashtra State Film Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Filmfare Awards. She also earned a 2011 Guinness World Record for being the most recorded artist in music history.
